There are many programs available today that are selling you a way "beat the system" by marketing your offering to people who are looking for a job. How to write your ads so they are perceived and look to be a job listing. In my opinion not only is this questionable on an ethical level, it's also not very smart from a marketing or public relations perspective.

Let's look at this situation. First of all, why would you market a business opportunity to people who are looking for job, for employment. These folks are still in the work for someone else mode. They are not even wanting to work for themselves. If they were, they wouldn't be surfing the job boards. They would be looking through the businesses for sale or franchises for sale web sites. So, right from the get go, you're talking to the wrong people. If you want to be successful in network marketing, you need to be talking to people who have an entrepreneurial mindset. And those that are looking for a job, more likely than not, are not going to have the proper mindset at this point in their lives. Not to say that they won't in the future. But the fact of the matter is that you are fishing in the wrong pond.

First of all, you are going to have a credibility problem with them because you have misled them from the beginning. Sure you'll come across the occasional person who has business and marketing sense, who sent you their contact information knowing full well what the ad is all about. But more often than not, you're going to be talking to people who are probably going to be offended that you didn't shoot straight with them. And they won't tell you that, they'll just say no thanks and be on their way. This is one reason, misleading marketing, that our industry gets a bad rap.

Then you have the people who will send you their contact information knowing full well that it's a business opportunity being offered, just so they can tell themselves, you and anyone else that it's "false advertising" and a "scam". Again, giving the industry a bad name. These people are negative on network marketing and home business in the first place. Why would you invite these type of people into your life? They are followers, not the leaders that you are looking for. In both examples above, they are looking for a paycheck, not financial independence.

I've seen it over and over again. Someone gets involved in a home business and initiates this type of marketing. First of all, because they have not been properly trained by their sponsor or mentor, they have no idea what to say to the prospect. Also, their expectations have not been properly set. Meaning that they have not been schooled in the finer points of prospecting. Sales is a contact sport. Always has been, always will be. That yes, it is a numbers game, to a certain degree. One out of ten prospects may sign up, but that does not mean that when you talk to the first ten people, you'll get one sign up. You might go zero for ten and then go three out of ten on the next ten prospects. That's just how it works. You must work the law of averages. But this is a topic for another article.

Then what happens is that new people will talk to ten or twenty people, get no sales and some negative feedback. Because they have again, not been properly trained and their expectations have not been set correctly, they then begin to doubt their company, their product, their sponsor and more importantly, themselves. After trying to talk to their sponsor ( many times who has no clue what they themselves are doing either, and therefore lack the confidence to lead and help their associates ) they exit the industry with a bad taste in their mouths. And human nature being what it is, many will look outward and blame their lack of success on just about everything except the truth. And of course, the truth is that the fault lies with themselves. For not learning, for not being realistic with their expectations, and the biggest fault of all, quitting without doing the aforementioned and not giving their business a chance. Guys, if you think that earning a six figure, mid to high six or even seven figure income is going to happen just by returning a few phone calls, you are sorely mistaken. It takes a lot of work, a lot of study and learning, and did I say a lot of work? There is a reason that there are many in this industry become millionaires. It's because they work at it, they don't treat their business as a part time job or a hobby. They are constantly trying new marketing strategies, learning new skills, adapting to the marketplace. And you must do the same. Do you think a CEO earning seven figures doesn't work at it? You bet they do. And you can earn a CEO type income in direct sales too, if you work at it.

Do you have any idea how many people thought Bill Gates was a raving lunatic? I don't, but I guarantee you it was plenty. What did he do, quit? No, he fine tuned his message, his vision, his marketing and of utmost importance, he persisted until he discovered what worked. Just as Edison didn't fail 10,000 times, but found " 10,000 ways that didn't work." So you need to keep going, keep fine tuning your skills until you find what works for you. Do you truly believe in what you're doing? Gates and Edison did.

Now, back to marketing. To be successful, you need to be fishing in a different pond. One which has bigger fish. So, what pond is that? The pond where professionals swim. Managers, executives, professional salespeople, small business owners. Speaking of small business owners, do you have any idea what kind of pressure they are now under? How many of them have, or will be shutting down their small business because of government intervention, health care, new taxes, etc.? I don't have firm statistics, but in speaking with them on a daily basis, I can tell you that many have had enough and are looking for other opportunities. It is becoming too expensive to hire employees, pay health care costs and an ever increasing plethora of taxes. It is just not worth it, not to mention the anti business climate we are currently in. And these folks have the necessary skills sets to be highly successful in direct sales. They understand that you have to build a business, they don't have a get rich quick mentality. The know that it takes work, and they love the idea of not having to manage and pay for, employees, deal with regulators and all he rest. You want to be talking to these people.

The beauty of talking to professionals is that once you know where to find them, and how to talk with them, you will never again run out of prospects to talk to. Ever, as in never. And a huge benefit is that while you are learning how to produce leads through online marketing, producing leads online can take 90-180 days to get a steady flow of prospects coming in, speaking with professionals can have you in the money today, literally.

To your success.
